Snaggle

Greenshot-style screenshots, native on the Mac

Version 1 Released September 18, 2026 Price Free License GPL-3.0

A native macOS screenshot tool modelled on Greenshot for Windows: capture a region, window or screen with a hotkey, mark it up in a proper editor, and send it to the clipboard, a file, mail or the share sheet.

If you used Greenshot on Windows and missed it on the Mac, this is for you. Snaggle is a ground-up rewrite in Swift — AppKit, SwiftUI and ScreenCaptureKit — not a port running under Wine or Mono, so it’s small, fast and feels at home on macOS. It lives in the menu bar and stays out of the way until you need it.

Capture

Four global hotkeys, all re-recordable in Preferences:

Action Shortcut
Capture region ⌥⇧⌘4
Capture full screen ⌥⇧⌘3
Capture window ⌥⇧⌘5
Capture last region ⌥⇧⌘6

The screen freezes under a dimmed overlay while you choose: drag for a region, press Space to switch to picking a window, Esc to cancel. A magnifier and a live pixel readout follow the cursor, so a precise crop is easy.

Mark it up

A full editor opens on your capture, with single-key tools: rectangle and ellipse, line and arrow, freehand, text, highlight, obfuscate (pixelate or blur anything sensitive), numbered step counters and crop. Shift constrains shapes and angles, the arrow keys nudge, and undo covers everything — crops included.

Send it anywhere

After a capture, a picker shows a preview and one button per destination: edit, save to disk, copy to the clipboard, email, print, Save As, the macOS share sheet or “open with”. Pick one with ⌘1–⌘9, or make one the default and skip the picker entirely. Saved files use Greenshot’s filename patterns, so ${capturetime:d"yyyy-MM-dd HH_mm_ss"}-${title} works exactly as you remember.

Installing

Snaggle is free and isn’t signed with a paid Apple Developer certificate, so macOS asks you to confirm it once:

  1. Open the download and drag Snaggle to Applications, then open it. macOS will say it can’t verify the developer — that’s expected.
  2. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to Security, and click Open Anyway next to the message about Snaggle.
  3. On your first capture, allow Snaggle under Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, then quit and reopen it.

Look for the viewfinder icon in the menu bar — there’s no Dock icon.

Prefer the terminal? xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Snaggle.app does step 2 in one go.
